Rachael Thomas
Salisbury University Public Relations Practicum
Mid Semester Evaluation
At about 5 p.m. on March 23, Megan and I were able to sit down after my shift to discuss how I have progressed since beginning my practicum at the SU Public Relations Department. Our meeting was brief because since Megan and I work so together so closely on a daily basis, she is easily able to give me more immediate feedback on my work and various tasks. I was able to ask questions about my strengths and weaknesses as well as my over all performance. We were also able to discuss any lingering questions that I may have after my evaluation. It was very nice to see how much Megan has continued to watch me improve as she, and the rest of the office, continues to teach me about what it is like to work in public relations.
-
How has my overall performance been?
Rachael has had a great start to the semester, she has been helpful in completing tasks and isn’t afraid to ask questions.
-
What have my strengths been?
Rachael’s writing started off very strong and should only improve as the semester continues. Rachael seems to grasp the bigger picture and asks questions broad and narrow to fully understand the role of both her tasks and the office as a whole.
-
In what areas can I improve?
Key areas such as writing and proofing can always improve no matter what the skill level is. It is important in any field of Public Relations and Journalism. Always re-read and learn from edits so that the same errors don’t repeat in similar assignments-whether at an internship, in a class or later at a full-time job.
While efficiency is key in the field being fast can sometimes lead to small mistakes and errors that could possibly take just as much time to correct as going slower the first time around. Try to find a balance of using time wisely but also not rushing yourself to move onto the next thing.
-
Are there any tasks I have accomplished that have especially stuck out?
Rachael’s initiative to go above and beyond what is assigned has stood out in the office. Often doing a little more than asked or going onto the next step without being told-yet making sure it’s in the right direction of the task-doing just enough in advance to be helpful without going too far ahead in a task.
The few times Rachael has made a mistake the error was never noticed nor brought to the staff members attention because she caught herself before her shift was over. So although mistakes have been made she took the initiative to fix things herself so they went ultimately unnoticed.
-
What traits do I possess that reflect positively or negatively in the office?
Rachael is friendly and always displays a pleasant disposition while in the office and greeting guests.
-
What are some of the most important things I should remember when continuing to work in the PR office this semester?
Please keep in mind the role of the Public Relations Office and its staff members and always keep professionalism in the highest regard. Continue to learn from not only your tasks but the environment you are in. Often the best knowledge can come from understanding the responsibilities of others around you and the tasks they are completing. Ideally after your time here you should have a comprehensive understanding of how a public relations office functions regardless of the position.
