Log :
Today was the first day of my practicum at the Salisbury University Public Relations office. My practicum supervisor, Megan Baker, explained to me and my fellow practicum student, Alison, what we would be doing while we work along side her. She gave us each a folder (see below) which contained tips, expectations and directions for many of the tasks she was explaining. We learned how to answer phones and how to transfer calls if the individual needs to be directed to a different department. We also learned how to send press release's and PSA's. After that I learned how to format and post a press release to the SU website where it appears under University News. I sent my first press release and PSA, which was about Delmarva Public Radio announcing two new shows. Then I posted the press release to the SU website.
Reflection:
I was very overwhelmed yet excited today. Megan gave us a lot of information to take in, however once I began doing each task it was easier to understand exactly what she wanted us to do. I didn't realize that SU had such a small PR office (Only about four people!). I like working in such a small office for my practicum becasue it allows me to ask a lot of questions about what and why we are doing tasks, as well as ask questions about the PR and marketing field. My journalism/public relations classes so far have focused a lot of their energy in the journalism section and not as much in public relations. Because of this I am very excited to learn more about what working in PR will be like.
